Labrisz Lesbian Herstory Archives and Censorship Museum

Ezen kívül mi magunk is részt veszünk a dokumentációban.

The new cultural and artistic initiative of Labrisz, the Cenzúra Múzeum, exposes cases of contemporary censorship and demonstrates the last 25 years of the history of the Hungarian lesbian community. The online exhibition shows the struggles, successes and cultural heritage of this community in an interactive form, in a 3D exhibition space.

What can we see in this exhibition?
The Censorship Museum shows the history of Labrisz Association and the Hungarian lesbian community divided into six main topic areas:
  • Past – Present – Future:historical overview
  • The beginnings:the formation and the first steps of Labrisz
  • Education and culture:educational and artistic publications and programmes
  • Activism:human rights struggles and community activities
  • Art:the Budapest Lesbian Film Committee and the XX Generations photo series
  • Community:community events, festivals, cultural events
The online exhibition also includes video content, including the opening and closing performances of the lesbian herstory exhibition organised in 2024 for the 25th anniversary of Labrisz, as well as round-table discussions and archive footage.

Why is this exhibition important?
„A Cenzúra Múzeummal azt szeretnénk felmutatni, ahhoz kívánunk segítséget nyújtani, hogy az LMBTQIA+ közösség mellett a társadalom más szereplői is lássák, felismerjék a mindenkori hatalom és a mindenkori szellem – értsd: egyén, csoport, közösség – nem kiegyensúlyozott viszonyának példáit, és az abból származó rövid és hosszú távú károkat.” – mondja Szűcs Réka, a Labrisz 25: leszbikus herstory Magyarországon kiállítás egyik kurátora, a Labrisz archivistája.
The Censorship Museum is not only about processing the past but also about looking into the future. This online platform provides easy access for members of the community and anyone interested to archival materials, inspiring stories and professional content.

‘If it becomes transparent to any social actor that they are not the only one abused by the powers that be, if they see that others can also get harmed, fail and be left alone, they will be able to feel empathy, acceptance and solidarity for themselves and others as well.’

Labrisz Lesbian Herstory Archives and Censorship Museum

We consider it important to explore and publicise Hungarian lesbian culture and history. We collect documents, images, publications, books, voice and video recordings related to the life and history of the organisation and of Hungarian lesbian history in general. We ourselves also take part in documenting.

The new cultural and artistic initiative of Labrisz, the Censorship Museum exposes cases of contemporary censorship and demonstrates the last 25 years of the history of the Hungarian lesbian community. Why is this exhibition important?
‘With the Censorship Museum we wish to show and offer help to members of the LGBTQIA+ community and others to see and recognise examples for the unequal relationship between the powers that be and the intellectual community – on an individual, group and community level – and the short- and long-term damages this causes’, says Réka Szűcs, Labrisz activist and one of the curators of the exhibition “Labrisz 25: Lesbian Herstory in Hungary”. kiállítás egyik kurátora, a Labrisz archivistája.
