This year\u2019s festival is centred around the slogan \u201cAre You a Witch? From Stigma to Community.\u201d The word \u201cwitch\u201d has long been used to describe women who live, love or think differently from the majority. Our festival aims to empower and bring together those who choose to live their lives beyond patriarchal and heteronormative expectations. In this way, LIFT helps carry forward a tradition of understanding and (self-)acceptance. Whether you have felt at home in this community for years or are just beginning to find your place in it, you are warmly welcome!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u26e5Labrisz 25 \u2013<\/strong> Activism (popup exhibition)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A witch or a rebel? A subversive or a critic of the system? This pop-up exhibition, which builds on the \u201cActivism\u201d section of our Labrisz 25 exhibition, showcases forms of creative resistance and demonstrates how otherness, critical thinking, and community advocacy can become a force for change.
Linked to the slogan \u201cAre You a Boszi?\u2014From Stigma >> To Community,\u201d our exhibition evokes the gestures and creative strategies that challenge norms and open up new spaces for visibility. It also draws on Labrisz\u2019s film works. Among other things, an excerpt from The Revolt of the Lesbian Jacobins<\/em> and props from the film invite visitors into the world of creative rebellion. In addition, contemporary artists bring to life the iconic locations that were once key meeting points for the Hungarian LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout its history, the Labrisz Lesbian Association has repeatedly drawn attention to the fact that creation can be a political act, resistance can be creative, and the community is a force in and of itself. What happens to our bodies when we have to adapt, when we hold back, when we suppress our strength? And what happens when, within those limitations, an intention suddenly arises: to move, to say no, to claim space, to become visible? In this one-and-a-half-hour somatic workshop, we\u2019ll experiment\u2014primarily through physical experiences that go beyond words\u2014with expressing self-determination, assertiveness, anger, setting boundaries, and feminine power. We\u2019ll explore what happens when we don\u2019t have to tame or hide what is powerful within us. Through movement, play, and ritual, we\u2019ll discover how everything that is released within us can become perceptible and visible\u2014first within our own bodies, then in each other\u2019s presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2019Attractions of a feminine kind’ opens up a door into an intimate space of love and connections between feminine bodies. The exhibition-performance talks about experiencing diverse forms of attraction towards the complex feminine quality in movement and in stillness, in time and in space. A personal queer perspective on what femininity means to us, as well as a celebration of the many kinds of relationships we form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ABOUT THE CONCEPT:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aim of the exhibition and performance is to allow a personal, intimate insight into the connections of women and feminine-identifying people, with an emphasis on queer perspectives: How do we connect to ourselves and each other? How do we interpret the meanings of femininity? How are we attracted or repulsed by this quality? How do we relate to its traditionally expected aspects, and what alternatives are we creating to feel feminine on our own terms, without feeling trapped in it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By allowing the audience to enter our world, we share honest lesbian and queer-feminine representation in the way we are comfortable with – trying to strip away the general hypersexualization and fetishization, but not completely desexualizing ourselves. We are not performing for any gaze, nor are we hiding from any interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u26e5\u201cAm I Queer Enough?\u201d \u2013 The Stigma of Bisexual Identity Across Communities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does it mean to be queer, bisexual, or bi+? In this workshop, we\u2019ll explore what it\u2019s like to navigate both the straight and LGBTQ+ communities as a bi+ person: we\u2019ll discuss invisibility, being categorized based on a partner\u2019s gender, and the feeling of \u201cnot being queer enough.\u201d At the end of the workshop, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and share experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop will be led by S\u00e1ra Vitrai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At NEM!, our interactive and system-critical reading circle, we will read excerpts from our zine titled Bonfire exploring witchcraft. Based on the work of Silvia Federici, we will discuss witchcraft, the legacy, consequences and purposes of the mass murder of witches. We will explore the connection between witch hunts and capitalism, the transgression of which gender norms connected lesbian women, old widows or even midwives disproportionately accused of witchcraft and why it is important to critically examine the increasingly romanticized representation of witchcraft in contemporary culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make your very own tarot deck\/card deck! Join us for a workshop on the intersection of queer history, magic, and DIY. Together, we\u2019ll explore how dykes* and queer people from the past have imagined their own realities, and look at their relationships with magic, spells, symbols, rituals and resistance. We\u2019ll also think about the meanings and power that queer symbols can hold, both historically and in our own lives.
Using quotes, stories, and images from queer archives as creative impulse, we\u2019ll create our own card decks through collage. Your deck can be dedicated to your favorite symbols, inspired by queer icons from history, or simply reflect whatever feels meaningful to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop is an introduction to history and the symbols and language that have been used to express queer identity, love, connection, and mutual care over time. It\u2019s also an invitation to share ideas, talk about our own relationships with symbols, and, most importantly, have fun making something beautiful and personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s LIFT slogan, \u201cAre You a Witch? From Stigma >> to Community,\u201d invites us to examine the labels, prejudices, and life situations that can accompany the life journeys of lesbian* women\u2014and, in a broader sense, those belonging to the LGBTQ+ community\u2014in various ways, as well as how we can transform these into experience, strength, and community. In connection with this, we invite you to a unique \u201cliving library.\u201d This time, the \u201cbooks\u201d are members of our community from different generations and life situations who will share their own stories, experiences, and perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was it like to live as a lesbian before the fall of communism? What stigmas does a transgender lesbian woman face? What does \u201cotherness\u201d mean at different ages, in different social situations, or within a specific community? And what happens when the stigma that tries to divide us actually becomes a point of connection?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the 90-minute program, you\u2019ll have the opportunity to meet the invited \u201cliving books\u201d in four discussion rounds, each lasting 20\u201325 minutes. During the discussions, you can ask questions, listen, connect, and encounter stories that bring the experiences of different generations and life situations closer together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A personal story has a completely different impact when we can look into the eyes of the person who lived it. And perhaps it is precisely in these encounters that we find the common ground that connects us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you a witch? Are you a gossip? Then this playful and visual storytelling workshop is for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gossip is usually seen as something negative, but prejudice, speculation, misheard and passed on information can spark creative inspiration. We are going to build on this during the two-hour drawing workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was inspired by the essay on gossip written by Silvia Federici, in which she reclaims a term having taken on negative connotations in the 16th century, instead, presenting it as a tool for sharing knowledge, preserving memory and collective identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop will be led by Dorottya Po\u00f3r, visual artist, comic artist and art teacher who has been running drawing sessions for adults called Rajzszakk\u00f6r Doty\u00e1val (Drawing Club with Dotya) since 2022. Everyone is welcome, including those who can’t draw as the emphasis will be on the fun and connection-building aspects of drawing! Drawing tools will be provided at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u0171veiben gyakran foglalkozik a szlov\u00e1kiai magyar kisebbs\u00e9g helyzet\u00e9vel, a n\u0151i l\u00e9ttel, az identit\u00e1ssal \u00e9s a t\u00e1rsadalmi el\u0151\u00edt\u00e9letekkel. \u26e5Closing Event and Seance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re wrapping up the 16th LIFT with special community programs. We\u2019re thrilled that our closing events are taking place in collaboration with several artists from Hungary and beyond its borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting at 6:30 p.m. in the ground-floor hall of Freedom, you can watch and listen to a musical performance by Violette Lagouine. Violette is a French composer and performer who is also active in Budapest\u2019s experimental music scene. Her music is characterized by alternative folk, melancholic melodies, minimalist guitar playing, and a unique, sometimes operatic vocal style. She writes and performs her own songs, blending elements from various genres in her music. Her album *Ta mouche* was released in January 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the performance, we invite you from the ground floor to the 5th floor, where the presentation of the winning entries from this year\u2019s literary slam contest will begin at 7:30 p.m., followed by a discussion led by Anna Borgos, a women\u2019s historian, psychologist, and the creator of the LIFT literary contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joining us will be Veroni Gyenge, a Hungarian slam poet, performer, and activist based in Slovakia. Veroni won the National Slam Poetry Championship in 2021 and went on to represent Hungary at the World Slam Poetry Championship in 2022. Her work often addresses the situation of the Hungarian minority in Slovakia, womanhood, identity, and social prejudices. She is an outspoken, courageous performer who believes in acceptance, equality, and standing up against hate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the closing session of the 16th LIFT, R\u00e9ka Dorka, a.k.a. artzy.kraft\u2014service designer, artisan, and urban witch\u2014will guide us through the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s wrap up the 16th LIFT together! We hope that, even during the festival, these stigmas will be transformed into a source of strength and a truly supportive community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
