Labrisz Lesbian Association, as a civil organization with legal personality, was officially registered in 1999, making it twenty-five years old this year!
This is a significant span of time for any community. However, considering that this is the life span of a women’s LGBTQ rights organization—not merely surviving but sustaining its strength and continuously developing—through the thirty years since Hungary's political transition, we can feel its weight even more strongly today.
We thought it was worth reflecting on this period and looking back at what’s been achieved. We believe that this historical summary is not self-serving or insular. Far from it. Beyond addressing lesbian and LGBTQ issues in Hungary over this period, it speaks to many other topics as well—about the history of the political transition, the desire for and experience of freedom, responsible action, minority status, marginality, women’s roles, the status of women as a minority, their emancipation, autonomy, strength, and the power and persistence of civil initiatives or grassroots communities.
Thus, we see it as essential to share these unfolding stories, not only because they are Labrisz’s own personal “story” of what we’ve lived, accomplished, and are proud of, but even more because we believe it can serve as an example for any minority or grassroots community. It demonstrates the unifying power of openness, connection, belief in oneself and others, acceptance, attentiveness, and understanding.
To this end, in November 2024, we were organizing a historical and art exhibition at the 2B Gallery in Budapest, showcasing materials from the Association’s archives. Various media—such as postal letters, photocopied magazines, analog photographs, videos, audio recordings, literary texts, oral history, or rather herstory—are paired with artworks that are connected in an associative way to the content or format of these documents, highlighting the many interpretative layers of each document. This aims to emphasize and support our statement: one community’s story is the story, example, and guide for all communities.
The documents on display have been selected from the Association’s archive by members of the Labrisz herstory working group: Anna Borgos, Dorottya Rédai, Réka Szűcs, and Mária Takács.
